Current New College members may borrow physical library resources they need from New College Library. Most of our books are borrowable; some are for reference-only use, and those are consulted in the library.

We provide book borrowing for current New College students and academics via two complementary services:

‘Browse & Borrow’ and ‘Click & Collect’

‘Browse & Borrow’ — providing direct access to our collections

Our ‘Browse & Borrow’ service provides current New College students and staff with direct access to browse and choose books from our shelves.

When is the ‘Browse & Borrow’ service available?

  • We provide readers with direct access to collections, where you browse and select books from the shelves, 8 am till 2 am, seven days a week.

How does the service operate?

  • You may wish to use the hand-sanitiser dispenser available outside the Library before entering the building or within the Library at the entrance to the Upper Reading Room.
  • Please ensure you tap your Bod card against the silver Library reader at the entrance before coming into the Library.
  • Readers may browse the shelves and select the books (CDs, DVDs, music scores) they wish to borrow.  They should issue these to themselves using the borrowing machine in the entrance hall, prior to exiting the Library.

‘Click & Collect’ — for staff-retrieval access to our collections

Our ‘Click & Collect’ service provides current New College students and staff with easy access to books they have requested in advance (which Library staff retrieve for them from our shelves).  This service complements our ‘Browse & Borrow’ service.  It enables readers — who do not need to browse the bookstock — to have the opportunity to collect books, which have been fetched for them in advance by Library staff.

When is the ‘Click & Collect’ service available?

Staff-mediated access to collections, when readers will be able to collect from the Library and borrow items they have requested in advance, will be provided for readers 8 am till 2 am, seven days a week.

How does the service operate?

  • Readers may place requests 24/7 for New College Library books via the catalogue, SOLO (Search Oxford Libraries Online).  Most of the unborrowed lending bookstock held in New College Library will be available for ‘Click & Collect’.  The service is available to current New College Library students and staff.
  • Readers must ‘sign in’ to SOLO, using their SSO (Single Sign-On) in order to access the ‘Click & Collect’ function within SOLO.
  • Search SOLO to locate the item you wish to borrow.  You will need to select New College Library from the list of Locations to see whether the item is available for ‘Click & Collect’ from New College Library.
  • Click on the green ‘Request’ button to initiate your request. Note this button will not appear if you are not signed in to SOLO or the chosen item is not available for borrowing.
  • The Library will aim to ensure that any requests placed for New College Library items are available for readers to pick up from New College Library the next working day.  This means that ‘Click & Collect’ requests placed on Friday or at the weekend will normally be available to be collected on Monday.
  • ‘Click & Collect’ books should be collected from the trolleys in the entrance hall of the Library, where items will be sorted in bundles, organised by the first three letters of your surname and the last four digits from your Bod card.
  • Pick up your pre-ordered books (CDs, DVDs, music scores) and use the borrowing machine in the entrance hall to check them out to yourself.
