Humphrey Battcock Lecture 2026

The event opened with welcoming remarks from the Interim Dean of Oxford Saïd Business School and Smith School’s Director, Professor Mette Morsing, who introduced our distinguished guest speaker, Kelly Sims Gallagher, Dean and Professor of Energy and Environmental Policy, The Fletcher School, Tufts University.

Drawing on her extensive expertise in energy, climate, and environmental policy, Professor Gallagher explored the remarkable transformations that have taken place in both China and the United States over the past three decades. Reflecting on the lessons that can be learned from their experiences, she explored a thought-provoking question: if the world—and particularly the United States—had recognised the climate challenge as an opportunity rather than simply a problem, might we find ourselves in a very different position today? Through her analysis, she offered compelling insights into how past decisions have shaped the current climate landscape and considered how nations can build resilience and security in an era of increasing global uncertainty.

Chaired by Cameron Hepburn, Battcock Professor of Environmental Economics, the lecture concluded with a vibrant Q&A session, where an engaged audience contributed thoughtful questions that enriched an already stimulating discussion.

If you would like to revisit the discussion, or watch it for the first time, the event recording is available on the Smith School's YouTube channel.
