Professor Sarah Mortimer speaks at termly History Society Lecture

Former New College Student and current Professor at Christ Church Sarah Mortimer gave a paper on John Locke’s interactions with the Dutch Remonstrants for the Michaelmas meeting of the College History Society.

Mortimer focused on the development of ideas concerning natural law, the church/state relationship and ‘toleration’ in the second half of the seventeenth century. The interaction of Locke’s political thought with his theories of Biblical exegesis was of particular interest. Dr Mortimer’s engaging and invigorating paper was based on research work performed over the last two years; and made for a wonderful exemplar to a strong crowd of students.
