New College welcomes back Nobel Prize Winner Stanley Whittingham

New College welcomed back Nobel Prize Winner and Old Member M. Stanley Whittingham. In a relaxed 'by the fireside' chat, Stan conversed with current Chemistry students studying at New College. He began with his first memories of enjoying chemistry, before moving to his biggest influences at Oxford University. Encouraging students to pursue their passions, he emphasised the importance of locating and digging into unanswered questions.

M. Stanley Whittingham received the 2019 Nobel prize in Chemistry for his pioneering work on lithium intercalation batteries. He is a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Materials Science & Engineering at Binghamton University, and Director of the NorthEast Center for Chemical Energy Storage. His research interests embrace materials chemistry and electrochemistry, with a particular emphasis on energy storage and lithium batteries. He pioneered the use of soft chemistry approaches for the formation of new often metastable materials that are electrochemically active.
