Essay Society with Supreme Court Justice Lord Sumption

On Sunday, the New College Essay Society held its first meeting of the new academic year. The theme was Liberty and the guest speaker was former Supreme Court Justice Lord Sumption, who has been described as 'the brain of Britain'. 

Students had the rare opportunity to enjoy listening to Lord Sumption speak on liberty and its role in politics today. 

Following his speech, JCR member Lucy O’Connell spoke on the issue of state liberty and international law, exploring whether a Nuremberg-style trial would be appropriate in the case of the war between Ukraine and Russia. MCR member Devarchan Banerjee then discussed liberty and the frailties of the human condition, using the Indian independence movement as an example.
