English Society with poet Owen Sheers

During Hilary Term, the New College English Society hosted its first guest speaker event since its resurrection following the pandemic.

The guest speaker in question was Old Member Owen Sheers (English, 1994) - distinguished poet, novelist and playwright. Owen read from three of his hybrid works of poetry: his verse drama Pink Mist, and two BBC film-poems, the BAFTA and Grierson-nominated The Green Hollow and To Provide All People, which marked the 70th Anniversary of the NHS. The event was attended by JCR, MCR and SCR members from the College’s English department and was followed by drinks.

Natasha Fox, President of the English Society, said of the event:

‘We were thrilled to have Owen back at New College. His readings were very compelling, and it was fascinating to gain insight into his writing process and how he translates texts onto the stage and screen. It was a great success and everyone had a fantastic time. We look forward to welcoming more speakers in the future.’
