The Annual Law Society Dinner: Hear from 2nd Year law student, Jude

Last Friday, the New College Law Society held its annual dinner, welcoming back Old Members from across the legal world for an evening of food and conversation in Hall.

Jude, a second-year Law student, reflected on the evening and how special it was see such a wide mix of Old Members and students brought together by a shared connection to New College and the law.

The evening began with the final of the New College Law Society Prize Moot in the McGregor Matthews Room. I was lucky enough to compete and win, arguing on the meaning of "public authority" under the Human Rights Act before a panel of incredibly distinguished judges: Lord Justice Underhill, Sir Rix, and Mr Justice Eyre. It was one of the most challenging advocacy experiences I’ve had — the judges didn’t hold back with their questions! — but also one of the most rewarding. Their feedback afterwards was thoughtful and constructive, and it meant a lot to perform in front of such an engaged audience of alumni, students, and Fellows.Law dinner

After the moot, we moved to the Founder's Library for a drinks reception. I really enjoyed the chance to speak with Old Members from across the legal profession, from human rights barristers to legal historians and commercial lawyers. The conversations were friendly, insightful, and refreshingly honest — it was especially reassuring to hear how many people had taken unexpected routes through their careers.

Dinner in Hall was the perfect end to the evening. The food was fantastic (the chocolate tart deserves a special mention), and the atmosphere was warm and relaxed. Our guest of honour, Baroness Shami Chakrabarti, gave a powerful and thought-provoking after-dinner speech, reflecting on her work in human rights and the role lawyers play in defending democratic values. Her words left a real impression and sparked some great post-dinner discussions around the tables.

More than anything, the evening reminded me how special the New College legal community is — full of people who are generous with their time, experience, and advice. I came away feeling inspired, encouraged, and very proud to be part of it.
