New College Weekend in Lisbon - 9-11 September 2022

PLEASE NOTE that the closing date for this event is Wednesday 31st August.

The New College Society warmly invites New College Old Members and a guest to join them for a weekend in Lisbon, Portugal, from Friday 9th September to Sunday 11th September 2022. The weekend will comprise of two main New College gatherings as outlined below.

With the kind permission of HM Ambassador to Portugal, Christopher Sainty (New College, 1985), the Society has been offered the opportunity to hold an exclusive reception in the garden of the British Ambassador’s Residence in Lisbon, Calçada da Boa-Hora, 29 1300-091 Lisboa, on Friday 9th September, between 6.00pm-8.30pm. The reception includes drinks and substantial tapas.

On Saturday 10th September we have arranged for an optional tour of the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT), Av. Brasília, Belém 1300-598 Lisboa. This will include a talk by the Director of the museum at 10.30am, followed by a guided tour in smaller groups at 11.30am. The MAAT has advised that the contemporary art area will be closed for installing their new show taking place in late September, early October, however, we have been given the opportunity to go on the Power Station tour.

The cost of the reception at the British Ambassador’s Residence is £45.00 per person and the MAAT tour is £10.00 per person.

To book your place(s), please visit the University of Oxford secure Online Store payment facility using the relevant links below where there will also be an opportunity to inform us of any dietary requirements, and provide the full name of your guest, if applicable.

Alternatively, you may prefer to download the Booking Form, and return it with your payment to: Development Office, New College, Oxford, OX1 3BN.

This will not be a ticketed event, but your name, and that of your guest (if applicable), will be on a list of attendees with the Residence security team, and likewise with the museum, should you choose this option. The Residence, in particular, has asked that you present photographic identification on arrival (a passport or driving licence). We suggest you do the same for the MAAT visit.

The rest of the weekend is your own to explore Lisbon and the surrounding areas. Whilst we won’t be organising anything formally, we will invite those joining the trip to share their contact details, allowing you the opportunity to connect with others should you wish to get a group together for dinner on Saturday evening or for lunch on Sunday.

The expectation is that you book your own flights, accommodation and organise travel around Lisbon.

Should you have any enquiries, please contact Jonathan Rubery in the Development Office on jonathan.rubery@new.ox.ac.uk or call +44 (0) 1865 279337.
