Silencing the past: from Haiti to the Peloponnese”

The New College Society very much looks forward to welcoming Old Members and their guest(s) to a London Lecture to be given this year by Professor Nino Luraghi, Wykeham Professor of Ancient History. It will be held at the London School of Economics in their Thai Theatre, a tiered lecture theatre, on the lower ground floor of the Cheng Kin Ku Building on Sardinia Street, Lincoln’s Inn Fields, WC2A 3LJ (map), on Thursday 14 May 2026. There will be a drinks and canapés reception at 6.00pm followed by a talk at 7.00pm which will last approximately one hour including time for questions and answers.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Nino Luraghi joined New College as Wykeham Professor of Ancient History in July 2018. Trained in Italy, he held academic appointments at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universitat of Freiburg im Breisgau, at the Universita di Parma, at Harvard University, at the University of Toronto, and at Princeton University, where he was the Magie Professor of Classics until June 2018.

Nino is a historian whose curiosity goes well beyond his expertise, which is mostly confined to ancient Greece, from the Iron Age to the Roman Province of Achaia, with a focus on Greek historical thought and social history. He loves hiking in the mountains, although his climbing skills are no longer what they used to be.
