The Robert Allen Perkins Scholarship was launched in 2021 and provides a fully-funded place at Oxford for three or four years, depending on the duration of the course studied. Successful students will receive not only a full grant to cover the course fees, but also a significant grant towards living costs, with the aim of allowing the recipients to graduate debt free.

Manuella, our current Robert Allen Perkins scholar, is originally from London and currently studies Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) at New College. She told us more about the scholarship and her experience of New College.

How did you find out about the Robert Allen Perkins scholarship?

I found out about the scholarship from being on the Target Oxbridge programme via an email sent to applicants about opportunities. Target Oxbridge is a programme set up by Naomi Kellman (an Oxford alumnus) which is aimed at increasing Afro-Caribbean representation in Oxford. Before this I was struggling to choose an Oxford college so the fact that priority was given to applicants applying to New College helped me make up my mind.

How has the Robert Allen Perkins scholarship helped you?

The scholarship has been incredibly helpful. Before coming to Oxford I was worried about the costs associated with living and studying in Oxford because I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of budgeting. Being able to study without worrying about rent and unexpected costs has had a positive impact on my wellbeing.

Tell us about your experience of New College so far.

I have really enjoyed being at New College. Despite being a large college, there is a strong community feel and I've found that there are lots of opportunities to get involved in college life. I am particularly appreciative of how close I am with my PPE cohort as we work closely together.

You’re also a New College Step-Up Ambassador. What does this involve and are you enjoying working with the New College outreach team?

Being a New College Step-Up Ambassador has involved helping out on open days by giving tours to prospective applicants and parents as well as putting together resources for a subject guide. I am really enjoying being part of the outreach team because being able to support people from underrepresented backgrounds in their university applications gives me a real sense of purpose.

Finally, do you have any top tips for life in New College (and Oxford in general)?

One of my top tips for life at Oxford would be to get involved even if you don't think something is up your street. Give things a go and take advantage of opportunities to have new experiences. Also, my advice would be to reach out for help if you feel you are struggling. There are so many ways to get support in whatever capacity you need, but only if you take the step to seek it out.
