William of Wykeham had been keen to gain papal sanction and approval for many of his early actions in setting up and endowing New College, Oxford. The archives contain four papal bulls from the second quarter of the thirteenth century, predating the founder’s time by a century and a half. They concern the hospital or priory of St John the Baptist in Lechlade.
