Gradel Institute of Charity announced

It has recently been announced that New College will host the new Gradel Institute of Charity

The Gradel Institute of Charity is a collaboration with Charity Futures, the independent think tank which seeks to preserve the long term sustainability of charities, and will be the first research centre in the world to focus on the study of charity.

The new Gradel Institute of Charity will be tenants of the tower in New College's Gradel Quadrangles once it is finished in 2022. Prior to that, it will be preparing its programme, hiring an academic director, and raising funds for its future work.

The Institute will be integrated into the academic life of the College and the intention is that it will help fund a series of Junior Research Fellowships which will explore different aspects of charity. This is of particular value to the College as we seek to ensure that we are able to continue to nurture the next generation of academics.

The Warden comments:

"We are very pleased to be hosting the Gradel Institute of Charity in the College, as the third and newest of our Research Centres. Charity's important role in our society is often undervalued, and I believe that one cause of that is that it is surprisingly little studied in universities. What particularly attracts us is the opportunity to apply interdisciplinary scholarship to the subject. New College was founded as a charitable enterprise by William of Wykeham as far back as 1379, so this does seem an appropriate place to help remedy the academic neglect of the subject."
