New College DPhil Student selected a finalist for STEM for Britain

3rd year New College DPhil student Russell Buchanan was selected as a finalist for the Engineering category of STEM for Britain. The poster competition is held annually in the Houses of Parliament and is an opportunity for early career researchers to explain their work to MPs.

Russell presented his work on machine learning for legged robots which improves their sense of position while operating in challenging environments such as mines and sewers. This is done using inertial sensors such as gyroscopes which are cheap and widely available. In the future this work can also be used for other applications such as tracking medical devices.
