New College Society London Lecture, Thursday 16 May 2024

Legacy: How to build the sustainable economy.”

The New College Society warmly invites New College Old Members to a London Lecture to be given this year by Professor Sir Dieter Helm, CBE, Fellow in Economics at New College, and Professor of Economic Policy at the University of Oxford. It will be held at the London School of Economics in their Wolfson Theatre, a tiered lecture theatre, on the lower ground floor of the New Academic Building on Sardinia Street, Lincoln’s Inn Fields, WC2A 3LJ (map), on Thursday 16 May 2024. There will be a drinks and canapés reception at 6.00pm followed by a talk at 7.00pm which will last approximately one hour including time for Q&A.

What would the sustainable economy look like? What would it take to live within our environmental means? These are questions posed by Sir Dieter Helm, Professor of Economic Policy at New College, in his book: Legacy: How to Build the Sustainable Economy. During the talk, Professor Helm will explain more about the key features of different types of capital (human-derived and natural), why polluters should pay, and why the next generation should receive properly maintained natural and other assets from the current generation. There will also be an opportunity to put your questions to him on the environment, sustainability, and climate change matters.

The cost of the evening is £25.00 per head, and the dress code is smart casual. If you would like to book your place, please complete the online payment form, or contact the Development Office on 01865 279509 where we can take a debit/credit card payment over the telephone. RSVP by Thursday 9 May 2024. Due to the anticipated popularity of the event, tickets are limited to New College Old Members only. If there is availability nearer the time, we will open the lecture to one guest per person. If you would like to bring a guest, there will be an opportunity to state this on the online payment form.

We very much hope you can come. Places will be offered on a first come, first served basis, and once capacity is reached (which may be before the RSVP deadline), we will run a waiting list and be in touch after the deadline to confirm.
