Recorder Masterclass with Tabea Debus

Praised by The Times as a “neat, unforced, beautifully articulated” and charismatic virtuoso, Tabea Debus performs widely across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, continually expanding the horizons of music for the recorder. Her strong commitment to contemporary music has led to collaborations with composers such as Philip Cashian, Freya Waley-Cohen, Moritz Eggert, and Alex Nante, and to premieres at venues and festivals including LSO Soundhub and the Barbican Centre. She has appeared as soloist in contemporary recorder concertos with ensembles such as the WDR Rundfunkchor and the English Chamber Orchestra, and her premiere and recording of Gareth Moorcraft’s Diaries of the Early Worm won the solo/duo category at the 2020 Ivors Academy Awards.

Alongside an active solo and chamber career with groups including La Serenissima, The English Concert, and the recorder quartet Palisander, Debus has performed at major international venues and festivals such as Wigmore Hall, the Edinburgh International Festival, and Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. She has released seven solo recordings and is a regular guest on BBC Radio 3. Appointed Professor of Recorder at the HMTM Hannover in 2024, she is deeply engaged in education, outreach, and interdisciplinary projects, and has served as an adjudicator for major competitions. Her many awards include prizes from the Concert Artists Guild, Moeck International Recorder Competition, and Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Born in Würzburg, she studied in Frankfurt and at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she was awarded the Principal’s Prize and elected Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in 2023.

This event is supported by the Carmichael Fund.
