Joe read Music as an undergraduate at New College, before completing an MPhil at King’s College, Cambridge, under the supervision of Ben Walton, on the politics of Handel’s church music. He is currently combining AHRC-funded doctoral research at Oxford’s Faculty of Music, supervised by Michael Burden, with the role of Teaching Assistant at New College.
Teaching
Joe teaches tutorials for Prelims and Finals undergraduate courses in Music Analysis and Music History.
Research Interests
Joe is interested in the relationships between music, culture and politics in the early modern period, especially in England and its colonies. His doctoral research explores the reception of Handel’s music in Revolutionary North America. Joe is also interested in textual studies and editing: his edition of the music of the early productions of the plays of the eighteenth-century Poet Laureate Nicholas Rowe has just been published in The Plays and Poetry of Nicholas Rowe, gen. ed. Stephen Bernard (5 vols., Pickering and Chatto, 2016). His reviews of performances and recordings for the British Society of Eighteenth Century Studies can be found here: https://www.bsecs.org.uk/review-category/music/.
