Prof Joseph Conlon wins award for helping juniors return to chess

Congratulations to Professor Joseph Conlon, who received the English Chess Federation's President's Award for Services to Chess earlier this year.

Joseph is actively involved in organising junior chess in Oxfordshire, and received three separate nominations for his role in restarting over-the-board junior chess events once lockdown restrictions were lifted.

Joseph said, 'It was a pleasure to give children to play over-the-board chess - rather than through a computer screen - at a time when there were very few opportunities for them to do so. Cheney School were supportive in allowing me to use their facilities and the building used was ideal for ensuring social distancing. The biggest reward was seeing the children enjoying themselves playing real opponents after a year behind a computer screen.'
