Music Finalist's commissioned work premieres

Congratulations to Finalist Luke Smith whose new music theatre work ‘An Organist’s Confession’ was premiered this past week. Setting a text by New College’s own Professor of Opera Studies, Michael Burden, Luke’s piece saw virtuoso mezzo soprano Lindsay Bramley sing and play harmonium in a tragic yet often hilarious story of a church organist’s descent into something toward madness.

The work came at the end of a concert that included ‘A Cautionary Tale: The Evils of Tobacco’ by alumnus Samuel Hogarth, with a text after Chekhov, which is a humorous didactic on the dangers of smoking; Samuel Hogarth has been Kapellmeister at the Staatstheater Mainz since 2014.
