Tak Wing Chan

Wing is the Tutor for Human Sciences at New College, and a University Lecturer in Sociology. He is serving as the Head of the Department of Sociology, where he is also the Director of the Oxford Network for Social Inequality Research.
Teaching
At the undergraduate level, Wing gives tutorials for the following papers for Human Scientists: Introduction to Sociology, Sociology of Industrial Societies, and Sociological Theory. The last two of these can also be taken by students doing Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
For postgraduates, he teaches a class on Sociological Analysis, and one on Social Stratification.
Research Interests
His two research foci are (1) social stratification and mobility, and (2) family and the life course. On social stratification, he is interested in the connection between social status and cultural consumption. He is also involved in a project which explores the reversal of the gender gap in educational attainment in the UK.
On family and the life course, he is engaged in a few projects. One is on parenting style in the UK and how that might be associated with teenagers' well-being and behaviour. Another project looks at the nature of intergenerational relationship between adult children and their non-coresident parents.
