Mathematics at New College
The courses are fully described in the University Prospectus. Our tutors' research interests are in Numerical Analysis, Number Theory and Mathematical Biology, respectively, and their teaching interests cover a wide range of Mathematics in, respectively: Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics and Statistics. Dr Volker Halbach, a Logician and Fellow in Philosophy at New College specialises and teaches in the areas of Philosophy taken during the first two years of the Mathematics & Philosophy course. Computer Science students and joint course students in Mathematics & Computer Science are tutored for Computer Science by Dr Geraint Jones.
The Savilian Professor of Geometry, Professor Nigel Hitchin, F.R.S., holds a Fellowship at the College, and there is often a Junior Research Fellow in Mathematics.
Number of places available at New College
8. We are keen to include in this number students studying straight Mathematics (both three- and four-year courses), Mathematics & Computer Science, Mathematics & Philosophy, Mathematics & Statistics, Computer Science and Computer Science & Philosophy.
If you are a candidate for any of the Maths or Joint Maths courses mentioned above you are advised to take double Maths at A-level if possible, although a candidate doing only single Maths A-level would receive sympathetic consideration in particular if double Maths is not available at their school.
The tutors consider that all types of Mathematics A-level syllabus are equally suitable as preparation.
College requirements
The College does not have any requirements additional to those specified by the University and Departments.
