Academic Dress

Students are required to wear academic dress for matriculation, degree ceremonies and examinations. 

Sub fusc for men:

• Dark suit and socks, black shoes
• White shirt (with white collar)
• White bow tie

Sub fusc for women:

• Dark skirt or trousers, black tights or stockings, dark boots or shoes
• White blouse (or shirt with collar)
• ‘Black tie’ (usually a narrow ribbon)
• Optional dark coat
• Optional soft black cap

You also require a mortar board (or for women, if desired, a soft black cap) and an academic gown.

You will need to provide your own sub fusc. You can easily purchase academic dress from several specialist clothing shops in the city: the staff there will be happy to help you if you’re in doubt about what you need. The two main outfitters in the city are Ede & Ravenscroft and Shepherd & Woodward.
