The Chaconnes for Harlequin recorded in Feuillet notation

Five instances of chaconnes for a Harlequin survive in the Beauchamps-Feuillet system of dance notation. A comparative analysis of these notations allows us to discern some of the characteristics of Harlequin within dance, for despite the fact that these chaconnes were written by different choreographers and set to different pieces of music, they contain much in common relating to the structure of the dance itself, to the steps and the gestures. From these clues it starts to become possible to reconstruct a specific character within dance through his own vocabulary of steps, arm movements, and gestures.
