Kia Nobre

Dr Anna Nobre MA, (Ph.D Yale)

Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience

Tutor: Psychology and PPP

Teaching Profile:

Anna Christina (known as Kia) Nobre is Tutorial Fellow in Experimental Psychology at New College and Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Oxford. She arrived at New college as the Astor and Todd Bird Junior Research Fellow (1994-1996). Prior to coming to England, she completed her PhD at Yale University, and held postdoctoral research positions at Yale and Harvard. Kia heads the Brain and Cognition Laboratory in the Department of Experimental Psychology (link to lab web: www.psy.ox.ac.uk/B_&_C/). Her Laboratory uses multiple and complementary non-invasive brain-imaging methods (FMRI, ERP, EEG, TMS) combined with behavioural studies to reveal the neural systems supporting cognitive functions in the human brain. In particular, much of the lab’s activity is devoted to understanding ‘attentional orienting’: how the brain generates moment-to-moment predictions about events to unfold in order to optimise perception and action. Other current topics of research include: the representation of time, how words and objects acquire meaning, and the influence of motivation over perception. In collaboration with Professor Miles Hewstone (*link to Miles’ page), Kia has set up the Oxford Social Neuroscience laboratory, which uses non-invasive imaging approaches to investigate how social factors colour experience and behaviour. Kia’s teaching activities are concentrated in her main area of research interest – Cognitive Neuroscience. She lectures on the biological basis of behaviour at all academic levels, runs a practical laboratory course on brain imaging, and supervises research projects and library dissertations in the area of brain and cognition. Her tutorial activities parallel her lecturing activities. Kia Nobre participates actively in administrative duties in New College, the Department of Experimental Psychology, and the University of Oxford. She is the Psychology and Neuroscience Delegate for Oxford University Press.
